The Student Newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Volume XVI, Number 11 Charlotte, North Carolina Monday, September 8, 1980 *Real University City’ Metromall In Future Plans By Vaughn Winborn ' Carolina Journal Staff Writer Through the interaction of the UNCC Institute for Urban Studies, the UNCC Foundation, and area developers a Metromall has been pro posed for UNCC. It will consist of housing, both single, and multi family, business development and both local and regional shopping centers. Dr. James Clay, of the Institute for Urban Studies, plans to “create a real university city” around the universi ty, while at the same time avoiding the pitfalls of uncountrolled sprawl and haphazzard development. All of this culminates with the master plan for the entire area projecting UNCC into the twenty-first century. The central feature of the masterplan is the proposed Metromall, a regional shopping mall much like Southpark or Eastland mall. The proposed Metromall will be located on land UNCC owns between U.S. 29 and Interstate 1-85 adjacent to Harris Boulevard. UNCC will be able to maintain significant control of the content of the proposed Metromall. The land for the Metromall will be obtained through the normal means available between UNCC and area developers. This Metromall will be destined to serve the Northeast Mecklenburg county region much like Southpark serves the Southern Mecklenburg county region. Surrounding the proposed Metromall is the Metro Service Center. The Metro Service Center in cludes the Metromall, along with motels, conference centers and an of fice park. At present, all but the office park phase has already begun to grow with International Business Machines and several other corpora tions either building or already in residence in the area between U.S. 29 and Interstate 85, and across In terstate 85 roughly adjacent to Har- riss Boulevard across from the Metromall. On N.C. 49 across from UNCC near Harris Boulevard intersection the John Crosland Company is planning to build a local shopping center main ly to serve the immediate area, especially the university and College Downs area. Herman Alley at the John Crosland Company indicated that construction will begin, “hopefully, within the next two years.” This shopping center should include such establishments as the supermarket, a drugstore and perhaps a bookstore or barber shop. This planned shopping center should integrate well into the overall master plan in Dr. Clay’s opinion. UPB Gets New Vice-Chair By Renee Wright Carolina Journal Staff Writer The new vice-chairperson of the University Program Board is Mary Sue Macke. She received the appoint ment the first week of classes. Macke’s major responsibility will be coordinating publicity for all the UPB events this year. Good publicity is crucial to effective programming, according to UPB chairman Mac Richie. Without it, students remain unaware of how their activity fees are being spent. Macke was chosen from several other applicants for the post after a ; series of interviews with UPB com mittee heads and Campus Programs staff. The position calls for someone hard-working, dependalble, with a working knowledge of art and artists. The UPB vice-chair develops publici ty campaigns for all of the Program committees and commissions posters, banners and advertising lay-outs. Macke, a Georgia native, says she ; comes from an artistic family. Part of i her income comes from tole and land- scape paintings sold at joint shows with her mother. “Just little things,” she says, “My mother does the big Pieces.” Since her arrival in Charlotte - two years ago, Macke has been ; employed part-time in a frame-it- yourself shop. Working with various a * r bsts is what she enjoys most about Engineering student, es as an officer for the job there. A College Macke also se Mary Sue Macke Society of Women in Engineering, a new group recently organized on cam pus. Macke is looking forward to her association with UPB. “The people are great,” she says. “It’s like joining a family.” She describes the vice- chairperson’s position as “a fun job — enjoyable as well as hard work.” The UPB committee heads will go on a training retreat to the mountains this weekend. Any students who would like to participate in planning and organiz ing events at UNCC are urged to con tact a UPB member or drop by their office in Cone Center. She will be speaking in rooms 5 and 6 of the Cone Center where she will campaign for her father. Activities tentatively begin at 6:30 and last un til 7:00 Thursday September 11. Barry Brown, Mike Dunn and Ed Reid are the initiators and are hoping to have a lot of support from the students. Also on the agenda, is a committee meeting for anyone in terested in Anderson at 3:30 Tuesday in room 7 of the Cone Center. Barry Brown feels that Anderson would be a good choice for president because of Anderson’s view on military spending, conservative government spending, and his knowledge of the “ropes of Washington.”
